Whatever your flavor — rock, folk, blues, soul, jazz or world — public radio station WDIY’s The Blend has you covered.

Now in its second decade on the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania station, the program features today’s new and emerging artists spanning a dizzying array of genres, with a special focus on the local music scene.  The Blend regularly features live in-studio performances from both local and nationally-touring talent.

This is where rock singer-songwriter Willy Porter found himself last week. Willy, appearing with fellow performer Carmen Nickerson, played a few tunes and talked about his love of public radio.

Calling himself a big fan his local station, WUWM-Milwaukee, Willy explained that part of what makes public radio stations so special is that they are locally programmed. He said:

The playlists are determined by people who are generally much more aesthetically-minded and also very creatively aware of the needs of the community in which they function. Artists such as myself can tour around and find that there are open ears to what we are doing, and that’s rare.
